Social Justice Global Vision Statement - Summary The MPC Global Vision Statement was developed over months of study and discussion by the church's social justice committees, as a platform for future social justice work at MPC. It addresses five major action areas: 1. Peacemaking and Nonviolence On the individual level, we focus on education and training to incorporate nonviolence in our personal lives. On the local level, we share with the Human Rights area a concern for reducing violence in our Oakland community. On the global level, we support efforts to use diplomacy rather than military force in international affairs. 2. Energy and the Environment As individuals, we seek to encourage lifestyle changes that help us become more frugal users of renewable resources for our needs. On the local and national levels, we promote a society that protects, rather than exploits, the environment. On a global scale, we support enterprises that provide opportunities for people to work in ecologically healthy jobs that reliably support them. On both local and international levels, we work for clean, safe, affordable water for all human beings. 3. Economy and Economic Well Being Individually and as a church community, we focus on personal ways that we can become less bound to a materialist, consumer system. We support local economies such as farmers' markets. On a larger scale, we support efforts for a sustainable economy nationally and globally, such as the Oikocredit Project and fair trade coffee. We strive for a sustainable social community worldwide through programs such as the Global Marshall Plan. 4. Human Rights At the local level, we will work in collaboration with Oakland Community Organizations (OCO) to reduce violence and afford personal security to all our citizens. Internationally, we promote the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to secure safety, healthcare and education for all people. 5. Spirituality, Religion and Social Change As individuals, we seek to ground our social justice work in our Christian faith and active spiritual practice. Locally, as the Faith Trio, we join in common activities and faith interchanges with Kehilla Synagogue and the Islamic Center of Northern California, to create the basis for real social change. We will explore, in collaboration with OCO, a connection with an African American Church. At the national and presbytery levels, we will make better use of the resources of the Presbyterian Church USA. See the complete 5-page GVS
