The MPC Community enjoys a wide range of events throughout the year. Here are a few of the highlights:
On the last Friday of the month we frequently share a Family Fridays Dinner in the Family Room & Thornhill Room, followed by a film or group discussion. For example: in February of 2010, the evening included a delicious supper followed by a showing and discussion of the award-winning documentary, “10 Questions for the Dalai Lama.” In June of that year, the event featured Di Pagel, an international Godly Play trainer, speaking about The Spirituality of the Child and Godly Play.
The Fall Kickoff potluck lunch, held in mid-September, officially begins the new program year. Each year has its own theme; past themes have included grouping members by geographic region or birth or by Chinese horoscope sign.
The Fiesta Fantastica, sponsored by the Global Concerns Committee, celebrates the MPC community’s connection to Bolivia via our Joining Hands program. Bolivian food and art is featured, and we’re often lucky enough to have a llama present!
The Faith Trio Harvest Dinner celebrates the ties we share with local Islamic and Jewish communities. The event rotates between three locations; this past year, it was held at the Islamic Cultural Center in Oakland. Between dinner and dessert, an Interfaith Prayer Exchange is held in which a representative of each congregation reads a prayer (in English) of another tradition than its own to symbolize our solidarity with each other.
Every other year, MPC hosts a Yule Feast to celebrate Twelfth Night. This fabulous event is both social and spiritual in nature, often featuring drama, singing, and Renaissance-style costumes.
An annual Church event for more than 30 years, Tahoe Family Camp (at Lake Tahoe) is a treasured experience for our MPC Family. This week-long experience includes thought-provoking discussions in the morning followed by community-building activities — such as dessert potlucks, sing-alongs and a talent show — in the afternoon and evening.
