SPRING CLASSES:

1. READING THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW IN OUR POST-MODERN ERA

 Dr. Eugene Park

The Gospel of Matthew draws heavily on the Old Testament; as one scholar (Eugene Peterson) says, "The story of Jesus doesn't begin with Jesus...Matthew opens the New Testament by setting the local story of Jesus in its world historical context."  This seminar on Matthew will connect Jesus - and his story - both to the Old Testament story and to our lives in our post-modern world.   Our leader will be Dr. Eugene Park, professor of New Testament at San Francisco Theological Seminary.

Dates: Sundays, February 3, 10, 24 and March 2

Time: 8:30 to 9:45 a.m.

Location: Room 10

Class Size: no limit

Convener: John Hadsell (510) 653-4649

 Fee: $15

2. BIBLE STUDY: UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL OF MARK THROUGH THE OLD TESTAMENT

 Dr. Robert Coote

The Gospels are filled with quotes from the Old Testament, plus many references, hints, and allusions.   The only Bible the writers of the New Testament knew was the Old Testament, and they were eager to show that the life and teaching of Jesus were true to their Bible.  Knowing how and why the New Testament writers used the Old Testament enlightens what they wrote, giving us fresh insight into what the Old and New Testaments have in common and where they differ.   Our seminar will focus on how the Old Testament is used in the Gospel of Mark.  Our leader will be Dr. Robert Coote, professor of Old Testament at San Francisco Theological Seminary.

Dates: Sundays, April 6, 13, 20 and 27

Time: 8:30 to 9:45 a.m.

Location: Room 10

Class Size: no limit

8. LEFT HAND OF GOD

Karen Stokes

Join Karen as she leads a discussion of Rabbi Michael Lerner's book, "The Left Hand of God: Taking Our Country Back from the Religious Right."   Rabbi Lerner asserts that, however distorted both the Right's analysis and its solutions to America's spiritual crisis may be, it wins allegiance by addressing the human hunger for a life with some higher purpose.  The Left, by contrast, remains largely tone-deaf to the spiritual needs of the American people.  It is the yearning for meaning in life, not just the desire for money or power, that lies at the core of American politics.   Come and explore new possibilities which a progressive spirituality can offer this nation.

 11.  MEDITATION

David Longerbeam

Meditation comes in many forms and can be approached as both a healthy mind-body discipline as well as a spiritual path.  Come to this class to learn about both aspects of meditation - and to practice them together.  As a spiritual practice, meditation can be seen as the heart of prayer and the source of compassion.  As such, it is the common ground for the contemplative aspects in all major world traditions, as exemplified by the lives of great souls such as Rumi, St. Francis, Catherine of Sienna, Thomas Merton and countless others.  Let's explore the family connections.
